Hello!

My new mac will be here tomorrow. I am a total newbie and wanted to find out what you guys thought of as a list of "must haves". I plan on doing word processing (I have office X), web browsing (I assume Safari), some gui customizing, etc etc. Some Kazaa like thing? Any other that i need?

Thanks a lot!

Any "hidden features, tricks etc" of OS X would be cool too!!!

I tried to search for this, but search kept breaking so i am sorry if posted previously.

I would suggest you don't do any GUI customization stuff yet. Chances are you might hose your system, so it's better to get comfortable with it first. And Mac OS is rather beautiful as it is so give it a chance to get to know it first.
The same goes for all the "haxies" that no doubt will be suggested to you here.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

glockfan: Congrats on your new mac and welcome. Here are links to your questions. They should have many programs listed for you.

1. Top 5 freeware/shareware programs

2. Best OSX Program

There is a GUI Customization Forum here at MacNN.

Also get ThemeChanger if you like to customize the look of your computer.

And to change icons, the best way to do that is to use CandyBar.

I dunno... due to the permissions model, OS X is actually pretty hard to break.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

LOL, trust me...working in a school district with over 3500 iBooks, I can assure you it's "breakable" rather easily...

Also check www.versiontracker.com and/or www.macupdate.com regularly to see new and updated apps.
Check www.macdesktops.com , www.xicons.com , www.iconfactory.com , and/or www.resexcellence.com to customize the look of your Mac.
Some of my software recommendations: Safari or Camino (avoid IE if at all possible), Mail, iCal, iSync, Address Book, iTunes, Notes, Checkbook, VLC, Poisoned (if you want P2P).
