i've been having problems with my cable service (yay!timewarner...)
is there a menubar indicator to show me if there is activity on my cablemodem?
for example, i know about menumeters, but that just measures download/upload info, i want to "see" that i am still connected to the internet...
anyone?

Apple's Internet Connect allows you to turn on a menubar item. I am not sure at the moment if it will indicate your connection status directly in the menubar (you need to try that), but it will for sure in the menu if you click on it. Sometimes there are also some lights on modems showing whether you're connected or not.

For what its worth, if you click the MenuMeters network menu item it will show you in the menu content if the modem is connected via PPP. Its not directly displayed in the menubar display, but the info is there.

In the Network pane of the System Preferences, you can click the option of having status shown in the menu bar for each interface (Airport, Ethernet, or modem).

Not on my G3 iMac. The only place that option shows is for using PPPoE. I have a cable modem connection.

On my G3 iMac, I can select the Modem from the interfaces popup, then click on the "Modem" tab, and set it there.
I have Airport status up in the menu bar, as well as Ethernet.
That's all available interfaces.

My cable modem uses the ethernet port, and no menubar monitor is available.

OH! - my misunderstanding, sorry.
Yes: the menubar widget for the Ethernet connection only appears to work for PPPoE connections (at least, it only appears under the "PPPoE" tab on my machine - I have PPPoE ADSL).
However, it is possible to have modem, Airport, and ethernet widgets up on the menu bar simultaneously, which is what I was saying - however irrelevantly.
