Hey guys. I have Remote Desktop and so does my mom. I'm in NYC connected to the net with a cable modem and she's in Chicago connected with a cable modem. For some reason I try to add her computer by adding her IP and it does not work. Can someone help me with this. I just want to be able to update some stuff and take care of any problems that ever come up. Thanks.

Forget trying Remote Desktop, then. I tried it once and there would be long pauses sometimes in the middle of doing something on the remote computer. This was on machines both using cable modems.
Your best bet would be Timbuktu, by Netopia. Two copies (one for each machine) are needed and they are much, much cheaper than buying two copies of Remote Desktop.
Timbuktu is what I use with my parents.
Timbuktu
They've even got a 30 day trial version with two trial serial numbers (one for each machine). I encourage you to try it out and see if it is right for you. Do it soon, and they will call your home halfway through and ask how you like it, and offer $20 off the price of a two-user license, making it $169.99 instead of $189.99
Never have I had another company call me halfway through a trial period to ask how I like the program.

Hey, thanks, but I want to know how to do it with Remote Desktop, I have the app through an education deal cheap and don't want to spend any more money, so how did you set it up over cable modems? Thanks for your time.

There are two potential problems that you may be experiencing. One possibility is that one or both of you have your firewall on. If so, you need to open the port for ARD. The other possibility, which is more likely, is that either one of your ISPs is blocking the port used by ARD. If that is the case, you're out of luck. Timbuktu will probably not be of any help either. Many ISPs block ports for security reasons. They don't consider these services as something a home user needs.

That's not the problem. Neither of us have the firewall engaged and I now have the trial version of Timbuktu just to see if it was the port, but that wasn't it, the ports are open that need to be because Timbuktu worked. I can connect to my parents computer through the Go menu and get to their hard drive, so how come RD can't do the same thing basically?
Thanks again.

I once tried the same thing and when adding the ip I got the error message from ARD that dynamic IP's are not supported. As the other party was on cable with dhcp, I couldn't set the IP manually. Is that the case?

No firewalls, and no ISP port blocking. It works fine for about 5 minutes on both ends, and then the screen starts to update, and then freezes, and doesn't work any more after that.
I switched to Timbuktu, problem went away.

ARD and TB2 do not use the same ports. So it may still be a blocked port issue.

i wasn't talking about your problem. Something else isn't right with your experience.

Out of all the choices, VNC is the worst.

Any reasons? Just curious as to why you think that would be?
