Does anyone know of software (or a tutorial) on how to create polyphonic ringtones? I just got a Sony Ericsson T616 (and some commercially available version of songs as ringtones aren't as good as I'd want them to be).

Thanks!

I think that polyphonic ring tones are just simple MIDI files that you can create with Finale, Sibelius, or whatever.

The problem is actually getting those onto the phones... I don't know what provider you have, but with Verizon, I've found that no matter what phone you get, there is no way to transfer custom ring tones onto the phone. The only ring tones you can get are the ones you can buy on the Get It Now service, which generally suck and don't include some of the more obscure things you might want to program in.

My Siemens S55 eats any and every standard MIDI file (.mid) I throw into the appropriate folder via Bluetooth from the Mac.

(FWIW.)

Edit: By "eat" I mean "plays without problems."

If you have pix messaging with your verizon plan and your phone supports it, then you can send the midi as a pix message and use it for a ringer.

Can you send a pix message from a Mac/PC? If so, how do you do it?

So, for the T616, any midi file will do? A midi file is equivalent to polyphonic ringtone?

And if that's the case, I could just use a midi composer or something to create ringtones?

Thanks,
BD

I made up a WAP site with links to midi files, and surfed to this address using my Nokia. Was able to d/l and install the midi files (previously mucked about using Intuem).
However, how to have the vibrating alarm go off...

That works with Nokias, since Nokias are actually good phones. However, Verizon doesn't offer any Nokia phones, and according to the guy I talked to, the phone I have, and presumably most of the crap phones that Verizon supports do not support downloading ringtones using the web feature. So I don't really feel like adding the web feature for $5 extra per month just to try it...

Well, it should, I suppose.

Check your phone. I know the S-E. T610 uses standard .mid files, which can be downloaded en masse from the Net and created in any MIDI-capable notation or sequencing program.

I send midi files to my Seimens s56 via bluetooth without a problem, I don't CREATE the files per se, but I find them, and they transfer fine.

In Dreamweaver, you could do "new page" -> Other -> WML (although doing this just crashed my Dreamweaver MX 2004 -- most frustrating upgrade ever).

This is my super-simple WML page in BBEdit:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE wml PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD WML 1.1//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/wml_1.1.xml"> <wml> <card id="card1" title="MIDI ringtones"> <p>MIDI Ringtones Nokia 6610</p> <p> <a href="Star_Trek_TOS.mid">Star Trek TOS</a><br /> <a href="Jaws.mid">Jaws</a><br /> <a href="ATeam.mid">A-Team</a><br /> <a href="avengers_light.mid">The Avengers</a><br /> </p> </card> </wml>
.

I saved this page as index.wml on an apache server, and uploaded the midi files into the same directory.

Using your phone, open the page as http://www.your-server.com/(subdir)/index.wml, and click on one of the Midi links. My Nokia 6610 downloaded and played the Midis, and afterwards offered to save them. Voilą! Sweet Star Trek music

Wow... all great info!

Mac Guru - what application are you using to create/modify your MIDIs? Sweet MIDI Player X is something I've toyed with, but:

1 - It seems to not be really OS X responsive
2 - $25 is a lot to me to pay for it
3 - If there are more than 12 Channels it doesn't work correctly

Is there some other piece of software that will allow me to edit (mute channels, crop time at beginning or end, change instruments) existing MIDI files?

Thanks,
BD

My brother is a Music Major and writes them all in Sibelius. Oh and I LOVE Dreamweaver MX 04, it just created a WML page no prob. Don't know why you're having such issues.

So do or would I, and neither do I... which is why DW MX 04 is so frustrating: it would be such a wonderful application, (almost) everything I've always wished from a html app. If only it was a little bit more stable -- though I could live with that -- and faster. It really is, sometimes at least, unbelievably sluggish, as if all of it was coded in JavaScript.

Well, I'm currently lusting for a new 17" PowerBook, which I just might get myself when Panther arrives. Maybe a totally clean install of everything will solve some real or imaginary problems...

Just to follow up... using the code above worked great. I was able to upload a MIDI file, and subsequently download it to my T616 for use.

Now if I could only find a less expensive program than Intuem (which is absolutely awesome, yet not worth $70 just to change some ringtones), I would be all set. Anyone know of one, or hey Intuem... how about disabling some features to make a "ringtone editor" ;-) ?

Thanks again all,
BD

Well, I wasn't really counting on it anyway: DW 04 is just bearable on a dual G5.

I'll be trying out GoLive CS the day it arrives.

Heh, Intuem has just gone to 2.0.

Upgrade to Intuem 2 for only $49.
and
You'll be happy to know that it's still only $79
.

Maybe now's the time to ask them about a lite version?
