I downloaded an .avi file and i want to play it. I tried quicktime but it said i was missing something to play it. Im not sure what to do. Right now i'm converting it to a .mov with quicktime. I'm running 10.2.6 on a powermac, if u needed to know. Any help will be apreciated.

You're missing a codec, probably DivX.

Plays almost anything including avi/dvix

Command line mplayer is faster in my experience, but it needs a lot of tinkering. But it's worth it if you are on a slower machine.

video lan client (VLC) also works great.

MPlayer is better at playing avi files - a considerable number of my divx files won't play in vlc but will in mplayer. Ideally have both.

There is no need for you to use the command-line version - the UI/normal version works fine.
