thankfully, I know it's not the machine. I downloaded the new matrix full length trailer. I have a 20 inch cinema display attached and decided to view it full screen. Quicktime takes control and almost maxes out the processor. H3ll, I even enlarged it to double size and it's still unwatchable. So I try it in VLC and...20 to 30% percent of the cpu cycles!?!? That seems about normal to me....

I even tried a different, substantially smaller file...same thing in full screen....

The version is 6.3 of quicktime and I'm not impressed....anyone else want to give this a try? I'm minimizing vlc, flipping through windows, running the movie full screen in VLC in the backgound and not a hiccup!!!!

Return of the King: Sorenson 3 Video; 480x208; 155.8 k/s; QDesign 2 Stereo 44100 Hz; 2 min. 56 seconds. 26.8MB.

Matrix Revolutions: Sorenson 3 Video; 640x335; 326.1 k/s; MPEG4 Stereo 44100Hz; 2 min 30 seconds. 47.7 MB.

Return of the King plays nice on my Dual 1.25 with Quicktim 6.4 and 10.3. Full screen = 15% or so each processor.

Matirx plays on the machine, but consumes 75% or so each processor full screen. (and it 'laggy' when interacting with it).

My guess is 2 things: its twice the datarate and I've not sure why they choose MPEG4 audio coupled with Sorenson3 video. Why not just make it an MPEG4 video and be done with it? Still,

How cool would it have been to (maybe will be...) to release the trailers in Pixlet (!!!). That would rock...

Ya and all 5 people with the right computer could watch it , well that is if you don't mind downloading a GIG and crashing the servers.

All my Quicktime files, including the hi-res Matrix Reloaded trailer play just fine on my machine (dual G5, 1.5GB, Radeon 9600)

If it's only a minute long, I don't think it's a gig.. but it'll still be huge hehe. However, that is strange that pixlet files play well on g5's and not that dumb matrix trailer. It definitely has a problem.. it works fine on my ibook here except some lag in the beginning, which I have never seen in a quicktime trailer before. (I always dl full qual.) I mean, if g5 users have the same problem as I have on my 600mhz ibook, it's the trailer, not the computer.

dimensions not divisible by 8 can't use hardware acceleration for scaling. dimensions not even divisible by 2 make baby jesus cry. That's the biggest problem. As for the G5 issue, 3ivx is known to make heavy use of a certain altivec call that just happens to be ass-backwards for G5s' new altivec implementation. Perhaps Sorenson's codec is in a similar situation, and a new compile or new altivec coding will fix it.
