I am trying to back up to another computer (a partition on a hard drive) on my home network using Retrospect Express which I gather from the instructions is possible. However, when I try to do so I get "couldn't create backup set, error -5000 (server: no privileges)"

How can I get this to work? I gather it's something to do with ownership and permissions for the hard drive/partition I'm trying to backup TO but what steps should I take to straighten this out? I have a 78GB partition unused on my son's computer. Ideally I'd like to lock him out but give me access.

If it's relevant, the two computers are connected by ethernet with a router in the middle. I'm running OSX 10.2.6.

Thanks for any tips.

I thought it would do it too, and got the same message. I called them, and was told Retrospect Express will not back up to any network volume. I was trying to do it over wireless network, and they said I'd have to purchase the full Retrospect version.

I suspected something of the sort. I wonder if the Backup with .Mac will do this.

maybe you could do it in target disk mode (something I've never used so I'm just theorizing)

The Express manual does say that you can do internet backup or backup to "an FTP site that is on your office's intranet".

"you must have a connection to the FTP site, such as an Ethernet network or a modem"

all is this is suggestive of there being some work-around if you had a more in-depth understanding of networking than I do.

--------------------------

while I'm at it can you move backup sets around from disk to disk? I have two external firewire disks with backup sets for three computers and I want them all on one disk.

I hate backing up!!!

I have a full version of retrospect and can not back up to a server volume running 10.2 or 10.3. The only way I have found to do it is to log in as root, then everything works fine.
