I did some tests with various compression apps, this is the result of compressing an 114MB access_log on a Dual G4 1.25GHz and an Athlon 1800.

Nice test. Not surprisingly good results were seen from bzip2. It really does wonders with text. For binary such as MP3 I have found there is little difference between bzip2 and gzip except that bzip2 takes a lot longer.
