If you want to sync Address Book entries, Safari Bookmarks, and calendars between multiple Macs with iSync you need a .Mac account.
If you want to sync files you need some other solution.

Yeah, I wasn't happy about that. I'm looking at getting an old B&W powermac as a server and will setup my own .mac server on that so I can do syncing.
O'reilly dev center has some articles on it.

have a link by chance?
I am wondering if it would possibly work if I have bluetooth installed in my desktop...
or as another way, sync my bluetooth phone with one, then sync it with the other...
the fact that you can't sync your desktop with your laptop unless you have .mac is something I would expect from microsoft, not apple
poor show

yep. Isnt it funny how the same features people claim isnt worth it, are the ones they seem to need and want? Good things cost money, becuase these things are made possible by people just like you and me, who have bills to pay and/or kids to feed.

How much is your time worth? The time it will take you to set that up, will be worth more than the $99 apple is asking i bet. Not to mention you will only be accomplishing ONE aspect of the many others inlcuded in the membership fee. Rather than just insisting on getting things for free, put things in perspective and consider the worth of things, especially your time and energy.

Well lets think about that for a minute. I have my own domain and have email setup for that on reliable servers that I have used for years. I have my own web page with a few gigs of space to build on it (and no, 100Mb won't always cut it) the server is reliable and easy to access. I have backup at home onto a 120Gb hard drive and dvd-r's. The only thing I see that .mac gets me is the ability to sync the addresses and contacts onto the two powerbooks in the family. Is that worth $99 per year, no I don't think so. Oh and backups would take forever, even with a dsl line.
By having my own server at home, I can stream the mp3 collection to each powerbook and the hifi, control the home automation system, perform scheduled backups, fileswap using ftp, host one off web pages or information, and sync my books together. Can't do a lot of that with .mac.
My time is my own and comes free. If I'm working in the evening for fun, then I'm learning something new, and my cost is minimal. As the server cost is already spent, the extra cost for the .mac stuff is nil. Next year I won't have to pay it again.
I know people say time is money, but if you're doing something for fun and learning at home, then no it's not. If I were learning this and billing someone for my time, then yes, it would cost much more than the $99 but I'm not. All it costs me is not spending time in front of the tv. Although with a powerbook, even that's not certain.
I think if you bought a machine specifically to do this, then yes it's only cost effective over a multi year time, but if you have an old machine spare, or are buying an old machine for other purposes then I think it's a cost effective solution.
My 2c.

Good for you I can also do all that, but the same reason I use a mac, is the same reason i believe .mac is worth it. Simplicity & Productivity (money spent = time saved, which in turn allows me do things worth spending my time on). To each his own I suppose.
But enough of this, as I realize its not on topic.

.mac includes other benefits besides the syncing and those you mention as being redundant.
in the first year (which cost only $50) there were many free licensed programs given away, including:
Bejeweled
Freeverse Board Games
iBlog
Marble Blast OS X
Super Collapse
Super GameHouse Solitaire
Super Nisqually
& Stickybrain.
Renewing .mac got you $20 off at the Apple store or a free copy of the Sims or Everquest, and my second year just started...
Not trying to convince you that you need .mac, just that there's more to it than email and web hosting...

After getting a new Ti and G5, I've found the .Mac syncing to be worth $100 on it's own. One click and I have all my contacts, bookmarks and iCal events on the new machines. That is handy.
The other apps and stuff are just gravy.
The O'Reilly stuff looks interesting tho'...
