I have a Mail rule set up for spam (I've never warmed to Mail's Junk Mail filtering). Quite simply, I have Mail delete a message if the from field contains certain elements.
The problem I've discovered is that when an actual message is downloaded that meets the criteria, Mail will still play the "New Mail sound," even though the message is immediately deleted.
Having the new mail sound play every time a piece of junk mail gets filtered is quite annoying and confusing. I do have the sound turned on because I like to be notified when REAL mail arrives. Does anyone know of a workaround, short of having to resort to Mail's internal Junk Mail Filtering?
Help greatly appreciated!

Dunno. I turn mail sounds off. Then the only way I know I have new mail is if it's in my inbox, which is what shows up in the dock.

I have the same problem. i have even tried appending the junk-mail rule to mark the items as READ.. no luck. I still get the newmail sound.

Okay, well, this is the only work-around I've been able to come up with. I turned off the new mail sound, and added a second rule:
if [all] of the following conditions are met:
[from] [does not contain] [junk mail criteria]
then
[play sound] [new mail sound]
Kind of an annoying solution to an annoying problem, but it works...

I do the following. I picked it up from somewhere else.
Turn off the new mail sound.
Set up your Junk rule and other rules to divert mail from your 'In' folder.
Set up the following rule which appears last in the list:
If From Address contains '@' then play the sound.
As this last rule is met by all e-mails which have not already been diverted/deleted, you will hear a sound for your 'real' mail.

I just tested this, and for some reason, it will not work for me. It still plays the sound for the diverted messages. I made sure the rule came last, but no dice.
However, the more complicated method I described before works fine.
Thanks!

Did you turn off New Mail Sound in the Accounts bit of the Preferences? I can't see how this approach can fail if you did this.
Did you do this for all your accounts?
