I'm about to get a server on my network. It will be headless, but in order to set it up, do I need to hook up a monitor to it and set it up independently, or can I simply plug the computer into the network, and then configure all the settings from a different computer? Do I need a special software to configure the server from a different computer?

Thanks,

lw

You'll need to plug in a monitor to do the initial setup. Once it's set up you can go headless and maintain it with Timbuktu, Apple Remote Desktop, VNC, or something similar.

We use Timbuktu everywhere and like it very much as a cross-platform solution.

You can configure an Xserve headless using the remote install capabilities of OS X Server.
