ok, since a bunch of people have obviously had trouble with imap email accounts i started screwing around to see what the problem was. i deleted all accounts and recreated them, trashed preferences, and went through all the suggestions i found.

in the end, i have no problem whatsoever getting my email using pop, but imap will not work. my email server allows for both imap and pop, but mail.app will only connect and retrieve my mail if it is pop. regardless of how i retrieve my mail, sending works all the time.

so the question is what the hell happened? imap used to work just fine... then stopped all of a sudden!

on a seperate note, i have found no way to permanently get rid of the .mac account that was created when i got my mac (i have never used the thing). everytime i delete it it comes back when you re-launch the app.

Go into your Mailbox menu and make sure it says "Go Offline." If it says "Go Online," it is off-line and you need to reset it.

It doesn't sound like this is your problem (since you can get POP mail) but I would check it anyway - a number of us overlooked it a couple of weeks ago.

thanks, but i tried that. it tries to connect for a long time and repeatedly... it just never connects. there seems to be something wrong with the app using the [imap] protocol.
