My friend has a G4 desktop, with a 466 processor, 768 MB of RAM.

Will Final Cut Pro 4 work on that machine?

Will Soundtrakc work on the machine?

(on the apple site it says soundtrack takes at least a 500 G4 single processor)

What features won't work?

If it works, will the performance be too slow?

I'm looking for people who have done it. I know some of you out there are using it with a G3, any of you using it with a G4 that doesn't have a fast enough processor.

I mean if you can use it on a G3, why not any G4?

Thank You.

If he can afford FCP and Soundtrack, I'd recommend he upgrades his machine at the same time. He might even pick up a cheap copy of FC Express at the same time

Yes, 399 for the upgrade is the same as a 2000 computer... good point!

Soundtrack won't launch unless you meet the minimum requirements. Final Cut will work, but it will be slow.

sound track and fcp both launch on my dual 500 at home and my dual 450 at work, both run just fine. FCP can get a bit sluggish sometimes, but its not that bad.

Yes, but Soundtrack won't launch on his single G4 466 since it doesn't meet the requirement for a minimum of a single G4 500 or dual G4 450.

However, you can hack around it. You just need to modify the info.plist file in Soundtrack's app bundle.

Because that machine has the 133 MHz system bus, I would recommend a $499 1.33 GHz G4 upgrade card with 2 MB L3 cache. It is the OWC upgrade card and its only $10 extra for overnight shipping
