Mail thinks it's retrieved POP messages -- but it hasn't!

Can anyone help me with this one? -- has me stumped and frustrated...
I have POP retrieval enabled on my Yahoo! email account, and usually the mail is retrieved without a hitch.
Today, though, Mail did not retreive the 11 new messages when I started it up. The activity message started out with something like "retriveing message # 1" but then went immediately to "retrieving message # 11" -- but it didn't retrieve anything!
One more thing. I logged into Yahoo and reset all these new messages to "unread." Mail did not retrieve them, but after Mail checked Yahoo all of the messages were back to "read"...
I'm grateful for any help on this. Thanks!

Maybe Mail moved them to your junk folder...

It has happened to me too [with other mail servers]. People are like calling me and asking why do I ignore them

Well, it definitely seems to be a Mail problem. The messages on the Yahoo server AFTER the last retrieved by Mail downloaded just fine in Entourage -- which I don't want to use. (I like Mail, damnit! )
Does anyone know how to read the .mbox files? I'd like to take a look inside a copy of the INBOX.mbox for the Yahoo account, inside the Mail library folder -- but I can't seem to read it. I've tried Text Edit, Word -- even pico!
Incidentally, I scanned through the file "MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded" that resides in the Yahoo account's Mail library folder, but this was no help. I deleted all of the message IDs for messages downloaded on Friday (the day the trouble started), but this simply resulted in a re-retrieval of the six messages PRIOR to the time the problem started... not any of the ones received by the server since.
Thanks.

perhaps a longshot, but have you tried the "rebuild mailbox" option in mail.app (in the mailbox menu.....)?

Thanks, but didn't work. Well, at least I learned about the option itself.

Mail's (at least 10.2's) very quirky. Hopefully fixed in Panther.
My "solution" for similar problems is to delete the offending account and make a new one. Drastic, but it works.

Well, at your suggestion Cad, I tried this. I was holding out on drastic stuff. To my surprise though -- it didn't work!
I did manage to fix the problem though, for a too-short while, by deleting all the emails off of the Yahoo server subsequent to the last good retrieval (having already retrieved them to my machine in one manner or another).
My guess is that for some reason Mail was choking on one or more of the next messages. This is not A Good Thing, seeing as how Entourage didn't choke. Now it is not working again, having stopped after I received a 300k PDF file!
My impression with Mail, much as I like it, is that it is not that robust. Actually pretty fragile.
Well, I've had it. I'm ditching Jaguar's Mail, and switching to another client. Hell, come the evening of Oct. 24, I'm just going to replace Jag with a whole damn new OS!!
