Have you tried xChat?
I'm using it even as I write this. In my opinion it's the best [of the free] as it has text encoding support etc. so I can write in Japanese, if I wanted to...

Mirc is a Window$ only, not even for linux. So, you have the options that you have. mirc only fserves will not work...

There are some 3rd party add-ons for xChat to make it work as mirc... but it's a bit funky [the last I remember you had to run it as root and stuff]

How could you not be able to get onto a server with Ircle? IRC is IRC. Are you sure you're doing it right?

when i try to connect to someone in a channel:

This server is using an alternate send method, please make sure your DCC Server is active and set to port 59. /dccserver +sc on 59.

From what I understand, what's happening here is that the person you queue a download from in reality uploads the file to your DCC server. The command given is for mIRC only, so it's of no use for you other than the fact that you need a DCC server on port 59. I've never tried, so I don't know if it'll work.

What's the problem you're having with Ircle? I've only had trouble with Ident authentication, but I figured that out a long time ago.
