Do you know what software he used to make it, and if it put it in some sort of container? There are some variations of the VCD/SVCD that won't play in Quicktime, AFAIK. Try using bbDemux to demux the movie into separate audio and video files. If you can open those then you combine them in QT Pro and edit away. Of course you won't be able to save it directly to an MPEG 2 file unless you have DVDSP and export it to an MPEG 2, but there would probably be a slight quality-loss in the re-compression.

ATI has their own MPEG2 format I think. I told a guy here in the tech shop about VLC (for other reasons than playing DivX, Xvid, etc) and he was stoked that he could play some certain MPEG2 clip with it also. He notified me that some friend of his encoded it with his ATI card.

Sounds similar. I don't think you'll have any luck with opening that file in QuickTime.

With the QuickTime 6.3 update, Apple released a new version of the MPEG-2 codec. Take a look at the bottom left of this page if you haven't updated yet.
