On my G5 (10.2.8) if someone e-mails me an Excel file with a .xls suffix, my Mac seems to see this as an SPSS file. That is, it has an SPSS icon, and will open in SPSS if I double-click.

I know I can right-click on the file to 'Always open with...' Excel, and this works for the one file, but this does not help other files.

In OS9, there was a control panel to manage the behaviour of the OS with respect to file types, but how can I correct this in OS X?

In get info, there are two things:
"Open with..." -applies to the current document

"Change All" - applies to all documents of that type.

Are you saying that "Change All" is not working?

Yes. It opens with Excel the first time, but the system then 'forgets' this setting.
