Does anyone know how to put a macron (long mark) above a vowel? The only way I know of now is to use the character palette. I would think there would be an easier way like option+n for a tilde. Thanks!

I don't know/remember the names of all the different things to put above a letter, but here are some:
Press option-e for accent
option-u for the two dots (umlaut?)
option-i for ^
option-a for the little circle above the letter
option-n for tilde

Play around a bit, and you'll find a bunch.

Choose the "Customize Menu..." option in the Input Menu (the one with the flag; or go to System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu) and add "U.S. Extended" to your available layouts. Now, go back to the app you wanted the macron'd letter in, and switch to "U.S. Extended" via the Input Menu. Type option-a, and then the letter you want the macron over. e.g., option-a then o types ō (hope that shows up here).
