I have noticed for some time that the links to other spreadsheets do not update even though the "Update all links" dialog box shows up when you open a linked spreadsheet.

It also appears not to work when you select Edit:Links:Update Links.

I haven't found anything about this on the MS Support web site ... but then again I have difficulty getting search to find specific help for my request.

I have upgraded to the most recent version which I believe is 10.1.5.

Is there a new trick to get the links to update? Or is this a bug?

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

Thanks in advance
Nuke

No comments ... anyone?

I have to use Windows Excel at work and know what Excel should do but I am surprised that no one has identified this issue before.

Or does no one else have this problem?

Again, thanks in advance for any comments or help.

I don't know if it's a bug, but I think I know the behavior you're experiencing. Are you sure you have formulas that actually refer to another file? Could it be that the formulas that created the links in the first place have been modified or deleted? (perhaps through a copy/paste-special/values sequence)

Try this: copy/paste everything (all sheets and cells) to a new file. Then, check to see if Edit>Links is available. If it's not, then I don't believe any of the formulas you just pasted could be referring to external files. Excel doesn't always (ever?) disable the links command even after all links have been removed.

Hope this helps.
