But it would be SO much better if I could play DVDs on a secondary display. Is there a different DVD player that will do this?

Argh. I had VLC player this whole time and did not know it could play DVDs. This is perfect. And, let me be the first to say that I'm retarded.

VLC is good. Also, in the DVD Player in Panther (10.3) you can select which monitor to view the DVD on I believe.

If you think Apple DVD Player in Jaguar is just OK, you will love the one in 10.3. It is heaps better, cleaner image and you can choose where to have the video (second monitor or whatever).

VLC kept resetting my Powerbook's Video output to NTSC, which messed up the image (and turned it B&W).

No problems with Panther DVD player, though.

I'm curious to know what you mean by "cleaner image". DVD playback right now on Jaguar looks pretty good to me, except when I play back video-based content (as opposed to film-based). In these cases, I get instances of combing.

If the Panther version of DVD Player greatly reduces this annoying artifacting, then I might very well consider upgrading...

The interface in X.3 is better, and it supports 5.1 also apparently (if you have the hardware).

However, combing is still there, and there is no DVD-VR support as far as I can tell (and no UDF 2 support either).

Also in the new player... the hack for toggling the Dolby suppression is now a menu item or pref, I forget which.

And it now works without a restart of the app.

There's at least a dozen other features well worth upgrading for. Exposé alone is worth a lot more than $130.

I totally agree. I'm getting Panther for other reasons besides DVD Player, but this is just another bonus.

you can choose which screen you want your DVD played on in the Jaguar DVD player too. Do it all the time.

Could you elaborate how? I do not see how to do this.

System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement

Drag the menu bar within the little representation of your main display to the menu bar of your secondary display. This will turn your secondary display into your primary display. DVD player will play DVDs on the primary display, whatever it is set to.

Hope this makes sense..

Interestingly, if you have Virtual Desktop, you can just grab the window in the pager and move it to the other monitor.
Neat!

Oh ok I see what you are saying. I appreicate the clarification.

My only problem with that approach is that then my dock and what not appear on the monitor that is playing the DVD.. The purpose of using the other display is so that it can be segregated from the rest of what I'm doing.

Ahhh..

I use this for hooking up my machine to my NTSC TV. It looks like ass running anything but full screen anyway.

I wonder if Apple's new rumored 30" Flat panels could double as a HDTV?

I try not to think of such things, as i JUST got over my buyer's remorse regarding the emotionally purchased (but still dearly loved) dual g4 some time ago. It would be in everyone's best interest if you cease to mention further this 30" HDTV/LCD display of which you speak.
