I tried to search on this, but no luck, esp since "ID" isn't acceptable.

I used to have a .mac account and used it for my iTunes Music Store, now I got rid of that POS .mac account and while I can change it so my email is one thing, it doesn't change the Apple ID and I have now option of doing so. I could do a new Apple ID, but Apple won't let me transfer my tunes to another account, so I'm stuck

Here's an image of the account screen where it appears you should be able to change it (with the text at right):

I don't want to keep it as this and I can't see any reason why they shouldn't let me fix it to an active email address or just to my last name or something. Thoughts?

Call Apple at the number listed on your credit card statement or in your e-mail Music Store invoice. They will allow you to change the e-mail address on your Apple account.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I don't see it in my email from my store purchases, can you reply with that number?

Just to clarify, they allowed me to make changes to the email address on the Apple ID, but not the name of the account itself, though here it notes jon_schalliol@mac.com as my actual email address, so I don't know for sure.

Is that right?? I don't think so. I thought the songs were registered to the computer via the computer's serial number (as shown in Apple System Profiler), and not by Apple ID. Otherwise, why would Apple tell you to "de-authorize" a computer before you sell it?

What I stated I think is right, at least about the Apple ID. All songs are likely coded to an Apple ID as a database "primary key". When you "de-authorize" a computer, you are telling the iTunes Music Store servers that the computer is now not associated with that Apple ID. This will cause any iTMS file to cease to be playable until the computer is again authorized. However, it may use the serial number to send to the database to store along with the Apple ID as a playable computer (comp 1-3 below) and then combines the "Apple ID" and a "Track ID" for a key for which tracks you've purchased. I created this database entity relationship diagram to show you how I think it might work:

Thoughts about how to change the ID? I can't imagine why they couldn't change that. The multivariable contact info (above) is simplified, but email addresses would be attached to the Apple ID though a system like this.

I changed my Apple ID a couple of months ago. I'm sorry but I can't remember for sure how it was accomplished but believe I did it at the online Apple Store, not via iTunes. Your Apple Store ID is the same as your iTunes ID.

I assume every person is assigned some kind of ID that never changes. If you want to change your email address (ID) with Apple, your assigned ID remains the same. This is how songs you have purchased continue to play on your computer(s).

From the Apple store home page:

--> Review Your Account
--> Change AppleID or Password

I did this a few months ago and it worked great.

In my last post, this is what I'm saying I did.

Same deal for me, I got that error though. Can you actually change your ID to another address?

I didn't try to actually change my ID. Let me work up some courage...I want to make sure I can change it back!

Yes, you can. Try a different browser when you attempt the changes. Perhaps you won't get the error on the next try. Just a thought. Good luck.

I'll give it a shot, the error I see that specifically mentions my .mac username seemed to be un-related to browser issues, but if you're able to actually change it... :-)

Anyone changed their .mac Apple ID to another address?

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. I never had a .mac address. I thought you were referring to your iTunes and Apple Store ID. I don't know anything about .mac.

No problem. I am referring to iTunes and Apple Store ID, it seems now though that people who didn't use .mac can change their Apple ID, while people who did can't. It seems like a way to punish people for leaving .mac to me. The only reason I used .mac for it is because they said it was all set up automatically.
