Ok, I'll explain. I'm off to Japan to work there for a month or a bit more. I am taking along my new powerbook and I have heard that people who have moved to other countries have suddenly found their purchased music disappear after they hook up to the 'net due to licensing.

Now I'm just wondering if this will be a problem. I plan to hook up my pbook as often as I can. Should I just burn disks of all my purchased music and re-encode them off of the disk? Or am I just being paranoid. Does anyone have any experience with this?

No, you won't have a problem, and the music didn't disappear. iTunes will make the music inaccessable (but will not delete it) if you change your Apple ID billing address to one other than the US. So if you're just going there for a month, I am assuming you aren't changing your credit card billing address. You will be able to access the store, buy music, and listen to your purchased music just as you would if you were still in the US.

To clarify, Apple only looks at your credit card billing address when determining whether or not you are licensed to play music purchased off the iTMS.

I think the story you are referencing would be the one where a guy moved to Canada, changed his credit card address to his canadian address, and iTunes hid his purchased music so he couldn't play it. I believe Apple fixed the problem.

Yeah, that's the story. I was pretty sure that there wouldn't be a problem, but just wanted to be 100% sure. Thanks!

What happens if you send your kid a 20 buck gift certificate and they don't have a credit card. This is related to another post in this forum that I don't have time to link to. Essentially, can't you buy music in Europe now (through a US friend with a credit card).

It says the recipient needs to be a US resident. I don't know how they enforce it, though.

Yes, this really is a non-issue. For one thing, the only thing that matters is whether your credit card's billing address is in the US, not where you actually are. I used the iTMS quite a bit in Japan.

Secondly, even the guy who apparently had this problem has the issue resolved pretty easily (and considering he worked for a rival download service, I wonder how genuine this really was).
