"Sam Nordemann reports that Photoshop is limited to 2 GBytes of memory, even on Apple's 64-bit Power Mac G5:
Just got a dual 2GHz G5, 4 GBytes RAM - fast as I hoped it would be. One complaint, and it is with Photoshop, both v7.0.1 and v8 (CS) beta Photoshop will not recognize more than 2 Gigs of RAM, so for my purposes I wasted the cost of 2 Gigs.
_ I never found this on Adobe's site, even after talking with tech support who said it was in one of their tech docs.
_ Apparently, although the person I spoke with is not positive, this will not be changing with the final release of v8. But hey, they put in a feature request."

Well, that sucks.

My 24-bit images are already 500 - 800 MB on average and I was hoping to tap into the added 48-bit capabilities of PS 8.0, but with 2 GB of RAM?!

Hmm, not so good. Do you know if that's the case with the Windows versions too?

Rumor has it that the limit is there BECAUSE of windows.

Anywho, I have 1.5GIGS of RAM and was going to get another gig just for photoshop, doesn't seem like I have a reason to now.

I think companies like Adobe should make a separate app for Mac and a separate on for everyone else. They would hate it if the ;Mac was a bottleneck for them. Well Windows is a bottleneck for us. I hate it. We are also inheriring too much of the Windows look and feel i.e. Adobe Reader.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

sorry i don't have the reference, but in the discussions on apple's websites there is a thread discussing the fact that individual apps can not yet allocate more than 2 Gb of memory in 10.2 on the g5. Apparently Apple has put in some of the 64-bit hooks into the OS, but not all.
