I don't know if anybody cares, but DragThing 5.0 is out and looks really cool. Unfortunately, I have a problem since I naively downloaded the new version and when it launched it asked if it could update my prefs file, to which I happily said yes, but immediately afterward it asked me to pay the $15 (+/-) upgrade from the old version (I didn't consider that it might be a paid upgrade). I decided that I didn't want to pay for the upgrade, but now the old version won't run because the prefs are for the new version. So, I have 2 choices: (1) pay $15 to upgrade to the new version, or (2) revert to the old and lose all of my settings.

Very annoying. I am not saying not to purchase it, but any existing users who just want to evaluate may wish to backup their settings before trying it.

Ouch. Yeah, just about every version seems to update the preferences file in ways that are not backwards-compatible... for what it's worth, you should have a "DragThings Settings Backup" in your Preferences folder that won't be updated... try tossing the new version and then removing the "Backup", and see if that helps.

I'm currently working on a small utility which will convert the DragThing 5.0 preferences back to 4.6.1 format. I expect it will be up on www.dragthing.com in a day or two once my beta testers are finished with it. Hopefully that will reassure people that they can safely try out 5.0 and can go back to 4.6.1 afterwards if they want to. I'll improve the updating experience generally in the next release after 5.0.

Thanks for the comments!

James
