Feedback I sent to Apple about iTunes

I know that with iTunes 4.0.1 you removed the ability to stream music libraries across the net. Now it is all restricted to local subnets. I was thinking that why can't you implement an authorization scheme that will work just like the purchased music scheme: You can only authorize the library on up to 3 computers. That way I can type in the IP of my computer at home from work and still listen to MY music. I don't see why that would be a problem with RIAA or anyone else. Plus it would restrict rampant streaming unlike before 4.0.1. Of course, to work, one would have to have net connection to keep tabs on the authorized computers. Just a thought. I'd love to see it implimented.

What do you guys think?

Not a bad idea, but I would still like it to support ad-hoc streaming without any previous authorization for local subnets. This is just a nice feature at work.

but what if someone has a dynamically assigned ip-address? i´m afraid that this idea is not quite perfect yet...

"And Zapp Brannigan, your score qualifies you as assistant delivery boy, second class."
"Hmm. I guess I'll have to sleep my way to the top. Kif, wake me when I'm there."

Well, uh, obviously this would only work for broadband users, and their IPs shouldn't change all that frequently. If it's a problem, there are plenty of services which give you a DNS which points to your IP, and have clients to automatically update it periodically. This is a bit of an unrelated issue to iTunes, and it's a bit of a non-issue too.

Here's a suggestion I sent to Apple after this latest revision to iTunes/Store:
I really like the celebrity playlists. I had the Idea that .mac members should get the same opportunity. It would work kind of like the amazon.com wishlist. You'd get to pick 10-15 songs from the store and it would be "(username)'s Playlist". Then your friends and family could check it out and buy it. It would be like the biggest mix-tape trade project in history, except completely legal, since you'd have to purchase the songs.
And of course this cool feature would be a benefit of a .mac subscription, as an incentive to sign up. Non-.mac members would be allowed to view and buy your playlist though, just not create one.

It should require username and login of the computer currently running iTunes to be able to share library.
that's a fair way to do it

Now that I like.

Well, their tough sh1t. You can't cater for everyone all the time. Otherwise we would have a version of OS X which still supported beige Macs.
Anyway. An interesting idea.

Just set up an ssh tunnel to tunnel the data through a local box to the work machine. Easy and it works.

Umm, why not authorize by MAC/Hardware Address?
