Hello,

Virtual PC 6 (and 6.1) and Panther drive me nuts :-( When I launch VPC (no matter wether 6 or 6.1) I get a dialog box where I have to enter my password "in order to complete installation" (although it is already installed for a long time now). Then a message appears, that says that changing the rigths on some files could were ignored (but doesn't say which one) and that "virtual switch" could not be activated (that means that the emulated PC would receive its own IP address). Any suggestions?

Thanks, Lars from Dresden (Germany)

I'm on the sidelines trying to figure about getting Panther... and then installing VPC.

Apparently you had VPC on before upgrading to Panther. Have you considered removing all the VPC & reinstalling (a hassle, I know). But I'd love to hear that it starts working right for you before I take the plunge.

Anybody got less severe suggestions?

I reinstalled VPC and run the update to 6.1, deleted my Preferences and it just runs fine again :-) I would even say it became a little bit faster now.

No problems anymore.

I thought I saw some reports months back about VPC messing up several people's whole systems. That left me unwilling to "go there" on my primary Mac.

Can anybody else testify that they've installed VPC 6/6.1 *after* installing Panther and everthing was still in order?

[I'm glad at least ONE person had positive experience - but I'd like to hear from some other poor beta-tester souls before I join that crowd ]

I'm just moving over to my new Mac this week (from a Win2000 PC) and don't have much spare change for software. Should I look at picking up Virtual PC for Panther so that I can run Office forWin, Quicken, etc. right away - or save up my money to get Office for Mac?

I don't want to have my new Mac Tibook 667MHz and be left looking at Windows software still - but it'll be awhile before I can upgrade everything to Mac versions.

Suggestions?

I would save up for the Mac versions. The price of Office has dropped recently. VPC is not cheap and while you end up with accurate windows emulation, performance has always been an issue.

Have you considered OpenOffice for the office tasks?

X11 is a seamless (though optional) install in Panther, so you have all you need to run it.

That may reduce the cost somewhat, at least temporarily.

absolutley, positively, save up for the mac version of the software. it makes no sense to buy a mac in order to run windows software in emulation. that will give you a crappy macintosh experience, and a crappy windows experience. i know the initial expenditure stings a bit, but once you purchase office, you are good to go for five or six years at least.
funky bitch

Sort of half-on-topic, but I have VPC5 running just great on Panther. I did a clean install but imported my hard drive file from my backup. It didn't take too long to set it all up again, and now it's amazingly faster at opening and closing the VPC than it was on Jaguar.
