Try THIS.
"...designed to address a problem whereby Mac OS X application programs (which were stored in archives that do not support UNIX file permissions, such as .sit) cannot be run when they are expanded."

Or you could simply get the free StuffIt Expander HERE

says the stuffit engine version is not compatible with this update, you must have version 8 (build 484) of the stuffit engine installed

try to run stuffit and it says "sorry expander requires stuffit engine 8.0.0 or later, please reainstall from the original installer.

downloaded the 8.0 version from aladdin and it comes as a .sit file that I cannot use.

??

Did you do a fresh install of Stuffit or did you just copy the apps over from Jag? The Stuffit engine in Panther is version 7.0.3, not version 8 so if you're using Stuffit 8 with an older version of the engine, it wont work.

I did the panther upgrade

what I did to get this working, I trashed the old stuffit, then downloaded the .dmg for 8.0, installed that and then the 8.0.1 update

worked then
