I've been trying to install palm desktop on my 17 inch rev a with panther. It won't even start the installation. It gives me this error:
Sorry, the operation could not be completed due to a System error: (Access Denied).

Tried a million things (permissions, locations, drives)
Nothing works.

I've installed it three times now on different machines. All installs have gone flawlessly. On each machine, there was already a Palm user profile in the Documents folders. That could be a factor. I'd make sure yours is in place just to be on the safe side.

Same situation here. I wonder why so many are having problems..

It appears the official word from MacFixIt and Palm is that it doesn't work in Panther. News to me as I've had no problems whatsoever.

I've had a user in my docs folder the entire time. Didn't work without the user either.

You have to reinstall the iSync palm conduit after installing Panther. Seems they didn't put that on the install CD.
I have 3 machines I've installed Panther onto. On my G5, palm desktop reinstalled without any problem. However, on my 17" flat panel iMac, Palm software wouldn't install at all. Too wierd.

Very strange...
Personally, I made a clean install of Panther on an upgraded Sawtooth G4, and then installed the Palm Desktop software without any problems: I even went through a 4.0 ---> 4.1 upgrade, because of some necessary program files included in the Handspring 4.0 install CD (I have a Treo 270).
Maybe it's a machine-specific problem...?

I did a clean install of Panther and installed the Palm Desktop last night. Worked perfectly. In fact, my USB backup/sync seemed a little faster even.

I got Palm Desktop Installed and working with my Sony Clie (Via Missing Sync) but Palm Desktop Backgroud doesn't work (which doesn't concern me as I use iSync, iCal, Mail, and Address book instead of Palm Desktop)

I have no problem with palm desktop in Panther.
I did have a problem installing Docs to go palm but that was I didn't have permission.
If you log in to root you can install anything.

If anyone is having problems with permissions and needs to know about root access I will post some stuff a bit later.

Here is what I did to fix:
- Zipped up an older version of Palm Desktop installed on another computer and moved it over
- Replaced the Install Conduit and Memo Conduit in my Library
- Re-installed iSync Palm
- Started Transport Monitor (or whatever its name is)
All seems to be working.

I was able to fix my mom's iBook install problems by installing as root.
It's not a big deal to do (there's even apple help in the system about logging in as root)
Do that, install Palm Desktop, and then log out and all works well...

I can confirm that cpac's solution works perfectly. I've just installed Palm Desktop 4.1 while logged in as root and it is now running beautifully in Panther. Hotsync works fine and all is well. My life is once more properly organised.
I am, however, really annoyed by Palm's official response to the problem. I received an email from their European tech support desk earlier today which said:
"The palm desktop software is not compatible with this operating system.
We are unable to prvide further support on this issue.
If you have any further questions please reply to this mail."
Well, yes, I do have further questions but none of them (or at least the way I would word them) would get past the MacNN censor!
Surely they should do better than this. It is unacceptable to simply dismiss my (and presumably many many others) enquiry with such finality, never mind that it simply isn't true.
Palm deserves a very big poke in the eye for this

I am having the same problem where I can't see my Palm device in iSync. I just downloaded and re-installed iSync 1.3 (which presumably has the Palm Conduit in it because it can't be found as a stand alone download on the site) and still no luck.
Any suggestions?

You need this:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...lmconduit.html
install it and then enable it (under HotSync Conduit settings). Then launch iSync and your Palm will show up alongside your phone, iPod and whatever other devices you sync using iSync.

For all those who have trouble installing Palm Desktop and/or DataViz Documents To Go, there's also another potential alternative: Pseudo.
Personally, while I had no problems with Palm Desktop, I used Pseudo to install Docs To Go in Panther, and it worked (without any "permission denied" errors, that is).
