My TiBook came with OmniOutliner.

When I installed Panther (format, fresh install), my license went away. It wasn't stored in the same place as my Graffle and OmniWeb license info.

I use it all the time and I like Omni so I'm not worried about purchasing a full license.

What I'd rather not have happen is to buy a license and then have a major point release come out that I would have to pay to upgrade.

Anyone know what the plan is with this app? Seems timewise to be prime for an upgrade.

Cheers.

Wil Shipley did an interview with some Mac internet radio site a while back and revealed info on the next version of OO, and a few other OmniApps. I believe a link to the site is in the latest Omniweb 5 thread on these forums.

No idea when the new OO is due, but you can just get in touch with the online store at OmniGroup and see if they can re-issue your licence key to you.

Wil did mention it (it was a Mac Night Owl interview). Mostly Wil tallked about OO being "thing 1" which was half way in between "thing 2" (Word) and "thing 0" (Excel) and not making it compete too much with either.

But of course, he didn't say when it would be released.

However, it's been 18 months since a major OO upgrade (2.0 was released in May 2002) and there are definitely some features that I'm sure they've implemented for 3.0 - i.e. pasting images inline, pasting file and web links inline, etc.)

Hopefully the release will be soon...

I'm not sure if I can get a license reissued as the original was bundled with my TiBook, only installable via Apple Software Restore...

I guess I could try to extract that copy from the ASR Jaguar CDs... But I think there is a license file elsewhere, not in the same places as other Omni licenses...

Perhaps I'll just wait a bit and see if something new comes out.

MadBrowser (and anyone else in the same predicament):

If you have upgraded to Panther from a previous version of Mac OS X (such as 10.2 Jaguar) or re-installed Jaguar or Panther over your previous install, you may have lost the installed license files for your copies of OmniOutliner and OmniGraffle.

If you chose to perform an 'Archive and Install' along with 'Preserve Users and Network settings' your licenses should remain intact.

If instead you chose to do an Archive and Install WITHOUT preserving User and Network settings, your previous system files have all been backed up into a folder at the root (top) level of your hard disk. This folder is called 'Previous Systems'. Inside that folder, there will be one or more folders numbered like "Previous System 1, Previous System 2", etc. These folders contain your older system and user files. You may be able to recover your license files simply by looking inside the proper folder of the archived system. The license files, if there are any will be in the following folder:

<Previous Systems/Previous System 1/Library/Application Support/Omni Group/Software Licenses/>

If course, you might have more than 1 previous system folder so be sure to check them all. If you do find license files, run the application you wish to license. If the application does not prompt you immediately for a license, open the licenses panel by choosing 'Licenses...' from under the application menu (the one that reads 'OmniWeb', 'OmniOutliner', or 'OmniGraffle'). With the license panel in view you can then drag the license files from your previous system on to the Licenses window in order to re-install the license.

You will probably want to install the license as a 'Computer' license so all users on your system have access to it, but this will require that you are using an administrator account to install the license. Otherwise, you will only be able to install it as a personal license (which goes into your Home folder and it not available to other users on your machine.)

=============================

If you have erased your original factory system altogether, you can get at the OmniOutliner or OmniGraffle disk image files from the Software Restore CD by performing the following actions:

1. Log into your computer using an account with administrator privileges.
2. Place the software restore CD (disc 1) or DVD into your disc drive.
3. Once the disc mounts in Finder, open a new Finder window or use an existing one and put it into column view by choosing from the 'View' menu 'As Columns'.
4. Now navigate to 'Computer' by using the 'Go' menu in Finder and choosing 'Computer'. Select the Software Restore CD or DVD from the list of mounted disks in the Finder window by clicking once on its icon. Do not select any of the items inside the disk, however.
5. Choose 'Go to Folder...' from the 'Go' menu in Finder
6. Type '.images' (without the quotes) and then click the 'Go' button.
7. Finder should then display for you the contents of an invisible folder on the disc called '.images' and inside this folder you should find a disk image (.dmg) file called 'OmniOutliner.dmg' and another called 'OmniGraffle.dmg'.
8. Mount one or both disk images by double-clicking the icon(s)
9. Once the disk images have mounted, you should see corresponding disk(s) in Finder under 'Computer' with the application(s) inside
10. Run the application on the disk image you just mounted by double-clicking the icon. As long as you are running as an administrator, this will cause the application to re-install it's license file in </Library/Application Support/Omni Group/Software Licenses/>. Perform this step for each application you would like the license restored for.
11. Once you have run the application you can quit it and eject the mounted volume it came on. Once all mounted volumes from the software restore CD or DVD have been ejected, you can safely eject the software restore disc as well.

Now, when you run a more current copy of the application it will recognize the installed license file.

Hope that helps.
feh, my image in my sig went away.

Well, I'd started to compose my answer, but Ironfist.cmg beat me to it.... yeah, that's the full story for dealing with licenses and OS upgrades. We may be releasing a tool soon to help automate the process of recovering your licenses in such cases.

Yes, OO3 development is well underway... you can probably expect to hear something official about it in the next few months.
