iBook 600, 640 MB RAM, Combo drive

Whenever I burn a playlist as an audio CD in iTunes, the computer tells me that it takes roughly 40 minutes to burn. Under Jaguar using iTunes 4.1 it took about 20 minutes.

I have my preference set to 4X, as I had past problems when "Maximum" was selected.

I tried burning with the preference set to "Maximum" and the timer showed 20 minutes again, but counted down very slowly.

The combo drive on my iBook is a 4X.

Is this a bug or did something go funky somewhere?

Follow-Up:

I'm burning two CDs for a friend...and it's only taking 15 min to burn (pref set to burn at maximum possible speed). The audio CD is playing fine.

Under 4X, I get much slower burning, although I have a 4X drive.

Does it hurt to burn at maximum speed possible?

External drive is recognized by iTunes, but am unable to burn CD since upgrading to 10.3. When I click Burn iTunes goes into endless 'checking media' mode. I have slowed down burn time, chosen data cd, restarted, everything. Also, am unable to eject CD after qitting iTunes. Have to turn off/then on external drive to eject CD.
