What media codec works best cross platform?
The site for our national tv uses WMP format for streaming its video contents, which is fine by it self in theory. We have WMP7 for Mac which is supported, but preferable I would use VLC or similar (if I have to use WM format), which also support WMP7 files. Unfortunately they upgraded their policy this summer so they only support inside browser playback, which isn't supported on the mac due to limitations in WMP7. I've been mailing them about this and asked if they could make use of other codecs which support the missing feature (IE QuickTime), but their official replay to this is they'll stick to WMP since most visitors are Windows users, and it's supposedly inconvenient for them to download third party software. To make it worse, they also use WMP for radio streaming.
So what alternatives are there? I've heard about mpg4, is that a viable alternative? Thoughts?
Thanks.
