I'm looking to purchase home recording equipment to create professional-sounding demos for a rock band.

I want the best quality I can get from a Mac and the appropriate software for $5,000 or less without getting overwhelmed by overcomplex interfaces... I am a totaly newbie to digital recording. The most experience I've had is analog 8-track recording.

Please suggest a strong starting base Mac system (G4, I assume, but what components would I need) and whether Pro Tools or Cubase or another package are the way to go.

Also, if there are any drummers that know much about software for programming great drums from hip-hop to rock to drum-n-bass and/or electronic drum kits, the knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
