I think apple should have an app similar to itunes but for watching vids (no not iMovie). I like the way on windows they have media player which handles this well, quicktime player seems basic in comparison. The alternatives on mac seem to be rather lacking.

But why? You don't normally play more than one movie in one go. You don't create playlists of them. You don't usually have so many movies that searching for them is a problem.
I fail to see the benefits. Quicktime Player seems fine to me.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

VLC and MPlayer work well for playing but their playlists are primitive at best.
For instance I have a 120 Gig hard drive I use to store TV shows on. I have a script that downloads in HDTV feed all the episodes of Alias, 24, and Smallville along with the most recent Southpark. I then often have a movie or two. (If you rent a DVD but don't have time to watch it it is nice to save it to the HD)
Anyway that's a lot of shows and doesn't include home movies and so forth.
While admittedly it is still small enough so as to make the Finder good enough, I think something like iTunes would be nice. Besides which, hard drives just keep getting bigger and cheaper. It's only a matter of time before you'll treat movies and TV the way you do CD's and MP-3's. Having metadata and the like would be very nice. I mean I have something like 50 DVDs. If it were possible it would be sweet to have them all in an iTunes like format.

Wow, that sounds interesting.
1) Can you explain how it works?
2) What format are these shows in?
3) What do you use to play them with?
4) Does it cost money to download them?
5) Where would I get these at?
Sorry, lots of questions.
