Since upgrading to Panther (clean install) iTunes has been very slow in a specific way: When I click to focus on it it takes a good 10 seconds or so to respond. This happens whether or not it's playing, minimized, or displaying the Music Store. It also happens regardless of the CPU load at that time. Once it finally does respond everything is fine.

I kept my iTunes library from Jaguar. I have about 2700 songs (12GB) in it. None of the files are missing.

Has anyone had this problem? I don't want to lose my playlists and whatnot.

Yes, I have the same problem on my 1Ghz TiBook SD.

For me iTunes seems to pause for a good 4/5 secs before displaying on screen following launch, and again when switching to iTunes from other apps - even when the display is off and I am not playing music.

Archive and Install here - was thinking maybee a clean install would solve it be obvously not.

For me swithing between songs is slower. Not extreme but just slower, and you also notice more disk activity while switching songs. (Clean install)

External drive is recognized by iTunes, but am unable to burn CD since upgrading to 10.3. When I click Burn iTunes goes into endless 'checking media' mode. I have slowed down burn time, chosen data cd, restarted, everything. Also, am unable to eject CD after qitting iTunes. Have to turn off/then on external drive to eject CD.

I have a 17" Powerbook, with 1,417 songs in my library and iTunes 4.1 running on Panther - Everything works perfectly, very responsive, no problems at all.

I think it's just you

I have about 2,300 songs and now that you've mentioned it, I think it is indeed a little slow... oh well...

Bump: I think I might have found the cause. The slowdown hasn't happened since I quit Synergy. Can anyone else confirm this? What are your Synergy settings? Mine are to update every 10 seconds, and show the popup only for 5 seconds each time.

Edit: Actually, it looks like that didn't do it. Now I'm trying disabling music sharing/searching for shares (I'm on 56k).

iTunes visualizer (Apple's) now has frame rates dropped to 23- 25 frames in Panther and is choppy from time to time.

Anyone experiencing this or have any suggestions or work arounds?

This is on a PB 17 1.33 on highest performance setting.

Oh why did I part with my DVI 800 PB and Jaguar?

iTunes visuals are also slow for me on my DP533 with Geforce3. I suspect the new Nvidia drivers are rubbish...

All caches? Does that include your iTunes library, or just the regular system caches?

maybe someone here can help me. I put panther on a second hard drive (clean) and pointed it to my old music folder problem is it doesn't have my old playlists or ratings etc. I have been looking around trying to find these files and got my playlists back but still no last played info or ratings info or play count. It doesn't seem any slower to me but I also doesn't have synergy going on panther yet.

Reply from QPS support:
The drive you have uses a sw-208 engine and there is a communication
problem between itunes and disk burner with this drive on OS 10.3. In
our tests the drive did work with toast 6 so we know the problem is in
the itunes/disk burner support which is odd because the drive worked
with both programs on 10.2.8. We are working with apple to provide them
as much information as possible regarding the drive engine and back
panel to see if they can provide a fix for the problem.

I think I really found the cause now: I turned off local iDisk caching. I'm usually on dialup, and I guess iTunes feels some need to look at all mounted volumes when you switch to it.

Synsergy has not yet released an update for Panther. All haxies and menu bar add-ons will both slow performance and affect stabelity.
