I sent the following to Apple Feedback on Nov. 3, 2003:
I have a problem that iChat takes too much space up on my dual 19" LCD panels. I have a lot of buddies and use iChat for work, so I have a large number of windows open often, but I find that I miss messages because the windows are hidden. An option to have Tabbed iChat windows (then I could have one for all my work buddies or whoever I want at the time) and at a glance at the one window to see if I have any new messages.
Anyone agree, offer a better suggestion?

I just downloaded it, great in many ways, but there are some things I like a lot about iChat that if they would integrate Safai's tabs with icons, it would be great. The address book resolution and iChat available status messages for one. At any rate I'd like to keep this on iChat, but Apple should incorporate some of these items it seems.

I'd be using Adium right now if it weren't for the fact that it only connects to AIM currently and there aren't file transfers yet. All I really want is an app that'll work with all major networks (AIM, MSN, ICQ, maybe even IRC) and allow file transfer. I know it's extremely difficult but it has been done on the PC (Trillian). Maybe a Trillian port is in order?

I don't know, as far as I'm concerned AIM is it. I see no advantage to the other services and at least for me I have about 100 buddies on AIM and no one has told me they use another of the services and not AIM. At any rate, to keep on topic, does anyone want to send a message that they want tabs in iChat?

I like iChat a lot but it needs a few things.

- Tabbed windows. Common... Safari has it!

- Do it all in the menu. Why do I need the application open to do anything? I should be able to do it all (see, start, etc) it from the menu.

- Dynamic wind resizing.

not every Apple program must have tabs. Try Proteus.

There are at least 2 popular applications that support multiple IM networks on Mac OS X.

Proteus http://www.indigofield.com/
Fire http://fire.sourceforge.net/

as i hear it, adium 2 will have all that and a bag of chips. it's supposed to connect to all networks, have address book integration, use tabs, and still be as user friendly as adium 1. oh yeah, and it should support file sharing.

when will we see this mysteriously perfect app?
who knows. it's in alpha, but i don't know (i'm not inside) what that means. there's always discussion that it's coming... maybe adam's mad busy.

i love adium, but i'd use ichat if it had tabs.
in asia a million people use msn, too, so that'd be a useful feature.

doesn't ms realize they could kill msn messenger if they allowed ichat to use their network? hmmm.

pc.

Nice one, sound good. I've tried out an early version of Adium 2 when it only supported AIM, but the buggy GUI, and lack of MSN made me switch back to iChat, and Proteus.

Tabs would be the killer feature for me, I like Proteus' drawer, but tabs, and the way Safari, and Adium use them is sweet.

ever since expose i have turned off tab browsing in safari. i find it much easier to just hit f9 whenever i want to go to another window. i wish i could move my mouse in a circle (or something) instead of hitting f9.

Look for Cocoa Gestures (I think it might work).
