Use firebird?
Anyway, it would've been a nice feature. Especially on sites with lots of banners or stupid gifs.

Found the answer to my prayers from another thread here.
This little free utility just does that and is a God-send:

It adds a preference within Safari. Check it out.

Now I can make those jumping smilies stop jumping/moving and my CPU usage is back to normal on those sites!

pith helmet is an add blocking utility for safari that also has an option in there to show animated gifs : always, once, never.
whoops! i guess next time it i should click the links in the previous posts first
