So I bought my mom an iMac but now I always need to help her figure out stuff.
So I was thinking, I've seen VPN's in action and I was wondering if it was possible in any way on OS X (she's using Jaguar, I'm using Panther) to make it work, meaning me taking control of her mac and fixing whatever needs to be fixed through some kind of VPN.

I understand that VPN is over a network. But can't I do this if I know her IP ?
We're both on Comcast so maybe that would allow something that we couldn't if not on the same ISP ?

Is there anything out there that can do this ?

Would a VPN even allow you to do this without more futzing? (I don't know, myself.) Wouldn't Apple Remote Desktop be ideal here?

It sounds like what your thinking about is a remote control application such as VNC, Remote Desktop, or Timbuktu. I'd try Remote Desktop first because it is pretty simple to use to your mom shouldn't have any trouble setting it up. If all else fails, have her turn on SSH and go in that way.

Isn't Apple Remote Desktop actually only for networks ??
It wouldn't work across the internet.

i'd try something like Share My Desktop and Chicken of the VNC combo. i've run the Share My Desktop on my G4 in Columbus, and have connected through Chicken of the VNC on my mom's iMac in Cleveland. she's on DSL, i'm on cable, and it seemed to work fine. yeah, a bit slow, but usable. well, then again, the iMac is a DV SE 400, and my G4 is a 450. i had no problem launching and running apps from the iMac.

The best one is Timbuktu. You can get a free trial two client license from their website. Netopia.

Apple Remote Desktop is too expensive, and doesn't work well over the internet (always freezes up). Share my Desktop and Chicken of the VNC are ok, but Timbuktu is much better. (And it is easy to set up).
