Hey all - curious if anyone has real-world experience using both Illustrator 10 / CS and can comment on the supposed-speed improvements Adobe is claiming. Ill 10 has always felt sluggish to me (Ill 8 was the best, imo), and I'm interested in upgrading, but won't bother unless the performance has been improved.

i haven't spent too much time using it yet, but i opened up some old large files and it seemed significantly faster, which is really exciting, as it was dog slow before even on my dual 1Ghz.

one new change to speed things up i noticed is while scrolling or grabbing the page and moving it, it places speed above high-re rendering in priority, so you can move around fluidly and quickly while seeing a low-re (preview) version of the images and when there are free proc. cycles (and i would guess free video card cycles) it then renders in high-res. it sounds clunky, but in reality, it all happens very quickly, and allows for much smoother navigation, which was much needed.

the real test will be actually doing a big job in it, which will have to wait until i get my dual G5 back from the shop, when i do i'll post here.

The last worthy version of Illustrator was 8. Stable + basic = fast. Adobe must remember what Illustrator was, and should always be: vector illustration. Not page layouts (except packaging). That's why there are the Quarks, the Pagemakers, and the InDesigns.

I hope to run Illustrator CS throught the guantlet and see if it's 8 worthy. But I have my doubts.

Have you seen my pants?

Yea, I'd be curious to know how much Adobe optimized this one for Dual Processors/G5s.

You know, you can always request features for products, and if enough people request optimizations for Illustrator, I am sure Adobe would put a little more time into it with an update or sth.

The link to Adobe Is: http://www.adobe.com/support/feature.html

Seems like all the apps were optimized for the G5. Great!

Over on Ars one of the programmers for Illustrator discussed a lot of these issues. The way Illustrator works, it really isn't a strong candidate for dual processor optimization. One of the big optimizations was to change struct alignment but this then broke most plugins. Apparently a lot of speed issues related to that backwards compatibility. It also means that if you use a lot of plugins the upgrade may not be a good idea.

Here's the link. (Ignore the trolls) The guy from Adobe is called MacThemes.

This sort of negative attitude will get you exactly nowhere in life, my young friend.
You hear this strange noise in the background? That's the combined voices of Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, to name just a few, collectively tut-tutting you.
