is there any way to move items such as launchbar, konfabulator, and synergy around the menubar freely as you would a regular menubar item by holdin down the command key? I've seen it done in screenshots before, and would like to do it.

No. Apple took away the ability to create movable menu extras starting with Jaguar. They weren't officially supported in 10.1 either, but they worked.
