has anyone tried this?

i've been using wordperfect in classic and i would love to trash os9 and run linux wordperfect with x11 on my tibook.

i guess getting x11 onto my mac is relatively straightforward; found a websight with instructions for installing it on jaguar, which i'm still running 'til x.3.1 or so, < http://macbuyersguide.com/software/X11.htm > and x11 comes with panther. once installed, does x11 run like classic? so, do i have to have an x11 environment 'running' to run linux wordperfect or is x11 like an extension that linux wordperfect needs to use?

and then getting the wordperfect program onto my machine seems complicated. i found a website with loads of information < http://www.linuxmafia.com/wpfaq/index.html > but i'm not used to the linux jargon and the instructions call for doing stuff as root, which kinda scares me.

again, has anyone tried this? any advice? i'd like to do this tuesday when i'll have a free day.

I guess you would need to recompile the source code for the PPC platform and freebsd system.

Linux WP is outdated, even on its native platform. It takes some pretty nasty hacks to get it to run there nowadays.

And its tied to x86 because it uses WINElibs.

No, WordPerfect for Linux is only available as a binary for x86, so making it run on PPC is not possible.

However, if you are looking to finally ditch OS 9, try a combination of X11 and OpenOffice.org. It works really well, is free, and can read and write Word documents.

thanks for the replies.

i'm thinking of installing abiword now instead of linux wordperfect. when i'm plugged in at my desk, i'll still do most of my doc drafting in wordperfect 3.5e but while away and unplugged i should be able to get into my docs with abiword without running by tibook battery down with classic.

at apple site, x11 is only for panther now, but i found the beta for jaguar.

looks like the installation checklist is
x11
extra sdk libraries
fink
fink commander
abiword

i'll see how it goes.

Fink is a pain to use....you should really just try OpenOffice.org. All you have to do is install X11, and install OpenOffice.org (both graphical installers) and you're done.

Fink is not difficult to use if you use Fink Commander, that comes with the installer. FC puts a UI on Fink and simplifies using it.

But I agree with everyone else who says to try OpenOffice.org first. I don't know that AbiWord will even open WordPerfect files.

well, i like the idea of open office and i have been checking their website over several months, but what i really want is wordperfect functionality. i like wordperfect a lot and i have lots of macros and applescripts written for it, so i don't want to just dump it.

so, the goal is to be able to work with wordperfect files without having classic run my batteries down. there are sharewares that open word files, but i think the only other app to open wordperfect files is abiword.

from the abiword site http://www.abisource.com/tour/

"What use is a Word Processor when you can't share your documents with your friends? AbiWord is able to read and write all industry standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages and many more."

(of course, it might be easier just to buy a third battery but where's the challenge in that.)
