Well, in that case you're probably not running a window manager. Perhaps someone in the UNIX forum will help you fix that.

It's supposed to have a default Aqua wndow manager. But title bars don't show so I can't do anything to the windows, when Gimp starts same problem. Palettes and images have no window borders or title bars.
I installed XDarwin and that just crashes on launch. Dandy.

Just a thought…
I ran into the same launch/crash a while back.
Like the CLI idjit i am , I had grabbed various *nix apps and WMs just to see what was what. In the course of all that I installed BOTH X11 and XDarwin(xFree86). I presume this is A BAD THING.
Just prior to Panther I wiper my disk and started over with only X11. All was great and the upgrade even kept all my KDE/KOffice, Gimp, etc installs.
Happy happy, joy joy.

I only installed XDarwin because X11 simply didn't have title bars. I thought XDarwin will give me an interface. No, now they both don't work! The only app I installed was Mac Gimp.
X11 on my other Powerbook just quits on launch. Crumbs.

Check to see if you have a .xinitrc file in your home directory. If you do, rename it and try restarting X11.

Have you tried removing all the X11 stuff and reinstalling it from X11.pkg on the install CD's?

If you did a Finder search, it won't show up. A file that starts with "." is a hidden file in the Unix world, and the Finder seems to ignore them for searches.
Open the Terminal application, type 'ls -al' at the command line, and look for the .xinitrc file in the output.

Sounds like you have disabled quartz-wm. If you experiment with other window/desktop managers many will not have the Aqua title bar. You may need to look at the config files for the window manager you are using. As said above, many of these config files are in hidden files and directories in your $HOME directory.
Take some time to look through the fink faq about this. There is lots of info there.
How did you install GIMP? I bet that in the install process your ~/.xinitrc file was overwritten. A lot of sites who are trying to distribute open source apps via for sale CDs and downloads do not have installs that are "repesctful" about previous installations.
