I went to look at some specs here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloa...nosysreq=False

and the new file is no longer available for download. Maybe they are going to fix it?

What they did was leave the wrong file date on the info on the page. The download link still leads to an installer, but it is different than the one I downloaded a few days ago. I'll look at it more closely.

I downloaded the file. Different icon for installer, but same files. My bad. They just changed the download page completely and have the wrong information there.

So why not go to www.windowsmedia.com and get it from there? I did and WiMP 9 was there for OS X...

Yes, it's there. I did not know about this site. Strange that they changed the old download site so much though since it now has wmp 7 info there. Ah well it's MS.

Mactopia (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/) has never had the Windows Media Player 9 download available. Note the release date on the site you pasted was1/8/2002 12:00:00 AM.

OMG. Kinda OT, but I don't know if this has been mentioned in one of the "Mac WiMP still sucks" threads, but the browser plugin actually works in Firebird! Considering that, it should work in all other browsers as well. I just can't believe that MS actually went out of its way to make this half-arsed software to play nice with other people's software.

[edit: sorry, just found that thread, everybody already knew this, nothing to see here, move along!]

Actually for the first X days when it came out they did, and that's what freaked me out. They have now removed a lot of spec information (what codecs) and some silly uninstall instructions (System 9) and replaced it with the old WMP file info. Strange.

Either I'm having a Gaslight moment, or they used to have a picture of orangey sunset in WMP, followed by the download site. This is the same thing with the same information, but a different picture and nicer layout. Methinks they changed it.

You're thinking of the WMP 7 page here.

Actually that is the picture, but the info on the next page used to be on this one re specs and the silly uninstall instructions for OS 9. They changed it, made it better. Perhaps only the first day the download was available was it like that because I haven't been back since then until last night.

Nope, it wasn't like that the first day either when I downloaded immediately after it was available. The unnecessary uninstall directions for OS 9 were there, but the picture has been the same.
