Anyone notice that in panther, iChat takes up over 70% of the CPU? Does this happen to anyone else? I don't know what to do?

(this is no video / audio), maybe like one text conversation or two.

CPU load depends entirely on the type of mac that you have.. Not to mention any other apps you may be running as well.
But yes, It's a CPU hog when in use for AV purposes. Not really a fault of iChat. More of an issue with OS X itself. As all AV/VC apps are CPU hogs in OS X. I have no idea why.

I have a Powerbook G4 12" 867mhz with 640 megs of RAM. I have nothing else open. I just looked at it and it was taking 90% of the CPU with no IM's or rendezvous even on. Just the AIM buddy list. It made my machine go up to 156 degrees fahrenheit. I have no choice but to stop using ichat until i find a solution. It's getting way to hot for it.

iChat and iChatAgent both take 0.0% of CPU here when I'm not chatting. 1.25 GHz 15" AlBook, Panther.

One CPU hogging issue I (and a few others) did come across, was kind of with Safari.. occasionally, after downloading a file via Safari, CPU usage rockets up. And stays there. A quick peek in the activity monitor showed it was iChat hogging the CPU, and not the expected Safari app. Yet restarting either app fixes the problem.

now it's staying at 80% no matter what? I dont know what to do? before when i upgraded it was no problem, but now, i am having this problem after doing a clean install. I deleted the .app and reinstalled it from cd (via pacifist) and still no good. I turned off like reformat, and chat transcripts, and its just sitting there hogging resources. any suggestions?>

it's still being a problem. even when i dont do av stuff, its hogging it up. I downloaded regular AIM for AOL and that seems to have made my machine run better.

i had the same thing happen to me if i'd start talking to a specific person... it turns out he had an animated GIF as his buddy icon.

as soon as he removed it everything was fine. but while he had it on ichat would use up almost all of my cpu, and the icon didn't even animate.
