I was able to find someone that handles RT 66 software, so have found the answer to my own question.
If any one is interested, its: http://www.gps4fun.com/main_route66.php
They do not have it in stock as of yet.

If you read Italian reasonably well (or, for that matter, use Babelfish or some other automatic translator), there is a quite good review of ROUTE 66 2004 (European editions: the new US one should be similar, of course) at MacProf. Personally, I bought the Italian version, which is quite good, IMO - apart, maybe, from the graphic appearance of the maps, which could be a little better...

Great. I have M$ streets and trips on my pc, and I must admit, it really is great. Hope this one is just as good, I haven't found any other Mac alternatives.

I ordered Route 66 Europe 2004 (in Spanish) last Friday and it will arrive next Tuesday (tomorrow is holiday here in Spain).
It's a present for my father but will take a look to see if it works (dad if you are reading this, and that would freak me out, ignore it)

I am interested in buying Route 66 Canada version but it seems even more elusive than the USA version. When I compare the product info at the website, it appears as though the Canada and USA versions might be identical with different packaging because they "share" the others street network. Does anyone know anything about this? Or if someone gets their USA version would they mind taking a look at the detail of the Canada streets and post back here? Not much customer support via emails it would seem. Thanks.

You'll be glad to know that Route 66 comes packaged with both USA & Canada maps on the CDs. Which is good for me because I live in Virginia but drive around Ontario fairly often.
In fact I just looked up my old apartment in downtown Toronto and there is it... street level detail as well. I haven't checked out the "points of interest" function yet since I literally just got it installed, but it looks promising. Especially since there is no other street-mapping solution for OS X!

Received my copy yesterday. Can't get it to install on my Pismo.
When I double click on the installer it blinks, cd runs up and then it stops.
Any Ideas?
BTW, It will install on my Imac, but that is not where I want it.

route USA 2004 is an interesting mixture of solid utility and utter thoughtlessness.
on the positive side:
1) the 3cds cover both canada and the us. they're very good quality and the search feature is very powerful. the CD's aren't required after installation...which speeds things up nicely.
2) the information function lets you scan across the map for street addresses on the fly. you also have a great deal of control when it comes to choosing levels of detail...much better IMHO than delorme.
3) plotting routes is easy and the software provides lots of handy data...from mileage, to total cost of transport (including gas, maintanance and tolls)
4) it supports GPS interfacing...which is nice if you have the hardware.
5) at $37, the price is right and unlike the venerable delorme road atlas v.6 for OS9, is actually both up-to-date and able to run under panther.
on the negative sode:
1) it comes with no documentation. nada. no pamphlet. no PDF manual. nothing but an HTML help file accessed through the program itself.
2) several things which should work don't seem to...customizing the toolbar doesn't "stick" when you quit. no global undos and the icons are blue, ugly and indistinct.
3) my biggest gripe....to save a map, you must first set a departure and destination point. zooming in, setting levels of detail and etc takes time. once a map is at the correct size and position, you should be able to save it and add more data later. without choosing 2 points, you can't save the map. this problem is made worse by the fact that you must use zoom in/ zoom out tools which demand lots of clicking. there is a drop-down that lets you pick screen dimensions in square miles, but it's small and hidden. haven't you guys heard of a slider?
all in all, it's a lot of power for $37. don't expect any documentation. don't expect any polish (from what is clearly a mediocre windoze port) and don't expect miracles.

Unfortunately, I don't expect much when this is the only street mapping solution available currently for OS X.
I think it's definitely worth $40, no question. It could use some interface tweaking... yes those toolbar icons are horrible. I had to turn on the text descriptions just to figure out what most of them are. And the English localization is not the greatest.
Overall worth the money though!
OH -- also, I tried to register the product but Route 66 USA 2004 for Mac isn't even listed on their site when you go to register it, so I couldn't. Good job!

Can you save a map as a PDF with the roads and text as vector graphics? What about if you print to PDF?

You can print to PDF and this map is an example of the output. For some reason, the PDF version reveals a bit more of the surrounding area than what I had zoomed in on in the actual program display. Not sure why.

Well, it's vector graphics and text, but what's going on with those Interstate and State route signs?
It looks very unprofessional...

This is definitely not the most polished program ever made.
But for $40, I wasn't expecting a professional level GIS/mapping program. I wish more companies would offer this sort of program so we could have a choice... right now it's pretty much this or nothing.
Overall it suits my immediate needs, though. YMMV. If you'd care for any other screenshots or information, feel free to ask!

Has anyone tried this with the GPS hardware that Pharos makes? (sold w/R66 software on www.gps4fun.com) They claim it works with the R66 software and the mac.
Alternatively, as much as I hate to even ask, but has anyone sucessfully used Delorme's hardware/software through VPC? Someone posted that there were unable to unpack the Delorme software. Any thoughts or experience would be helpful, thanks.

Hello,
Rayming Corp manufactures the TripNav TN-200 USB GPS receiver that supports the Mac OX upto 10.3 (and Win/ BSD/ Linux). The Mac driver is included in the offering standard. For about $99 USD. check out Froogle.com for resellers.
Be well.

Mr. Rayming GPS, you've been reported for spamming the forums.

Yah, I found him last night when the periphs forum suddenly had umpteen GPS threads. I've deleted all of the posts that haven't been replied to, and PMed him, telling him to stop.
