Does iPhoto created web gallery absolutely require a .mac account or can it be hosted on other servers?

I'm pretty sure you're stuck with .Mac for the iPhoto album, but there are a couple shareware apps that will build a photo site from your iPhoto albums. Do a search at MacUpdate.

Yes, you can export an HTML gallery, and then load the files onto any web server.
Select the photos you want, go to File->Export, choose 'Web Gallery' and customise the settings to your fancy. When the export is complete, upload the folder that was created to a web server, and you're all set !

Is there a way to get the nicer templates instead of a plain thumbnail on plain background?

The built-in html plugin is rather limited. You can try Better HTML Export. It has more options than the plugin that ships with iPhoto and you make make your own templates with it.

Or you could try Galerie which also has a range of nice looking HTML templates for iPhoto. It isn't an export plugin like BetterHTMLExport, but it is free, and integrates just fine with iPhoto Albums.

myPhoto: all you have to do is plug in your digital camera, import your photos as you normally would into iPhoto, organize them, add whatever captions you want, and voila! Your photos are on your web page! And what did you have to do to put them there? Simply install myPhoto.

I've got a page that details setting up Gallery and the iPhoto->Gallery exporter on a Mac. Generally, you'd set up Gallery on a remote webhost instead, but the info may still be useful to you.
This info is definitely for "advanced audiences".
