Is there any way in Mail.app in OS 10.3 to disable the disquieting feature that fills up the body of a new email with the attachment images I include? I do not want to waste time dealing with open images when composing emails and would like for the default setting to not "view in place" attachents that I do not wish in the body of the email.

I now resort to Entourage to achieve what should be a standard bloat reduction feature.

Any way around this "view in place" in Mail.app?

I don't believe there is. By design, I'd guess.
While I also use Mail myself, I do believe that Entourage has more features (aside from the lack of an effective junk mail filter).

Control click the pic. One of the options is view as icon.

dillerX-
I just tried the control-click feature and it converted the full image (24k) to an icon as you said. I then sent three emails with the icon view-along with three composed with the image in full view. Mail.app shows that all were sent. The emails with the full view I received immediately. Two of the three emails I sent with the icon view I received but are delayed 20 minutes or more. The third -the first icon view emaiI sent- has not come yet (it has been forty-five minutes since I sent it). I am using Enourage to receive mail and have no problems with it in any way.

I would like to have the icon view as the default -although with this screwy delay it may be moot since I'm not certain Mail.app is equipped to do this properly.

Thanks for the tip.

Sounds to me like you need to fire your ISP if your mail is taking that long.

I don't know what causes the delay. If I send an email with the image in its regular full view form I get it immediately. If the image is changed to Icon view using control-click, then it takes 20-30 minutes. Beats me. Another reason not to use Mail. I never have delays with Entourage.

This and the screwy address book design makes Mail a second class application. I got the haxie that puts an Address Book menu in the menu bar but Apple should have done that. This attachment problem is beyond comprehension.

It's difficult to see how handling your attachments as either icon-visible or not-icon-visible can impact on processing the e-mail. Just to check, I have just repeated your exercise and both e-mails came to me instantly via SMTP/POP3.

philm-

Thanks for the test and results. I'm going to run the same test again -It may be my ISP or may be a screwy Mail.app installation on this TiBook. I thought it was strange that it did it but had no answer.

Just ran the test and emails- with both as icon and full view- sent and downloaded instantly. Go figure.

Thanks to all for the help.
