I use photoshop all the time. I make icons with transparency constantly. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make an icon with transparent background for either iChat or the login panel. I know that both of these apps CAN display an image with a transparent background,

iChat. the little aim guy. you know? the default icon for users that dont have an icon? Hes got a transparent background.

login panel/user icons. I have one user on my system whos icon has a transparent background. I made this tiff and did it the same as Ive done for all my other icons. This icon alone has a transparent background. Ive since lost the original, so I cant inspect it further to figure out why this tiff alone shows transparency in the background. Even if i had the original, i dont know how id figure out why this tiff was different.

Anyway, I'm sure there is someone here who has it figured. Just to let you know what I've tried:

tiff, gif, png, icns, ico

the AOL icon is build in iChat so that is not a good example. But it is possible though for you to see your icon transparent. Create an image that does not require "resize" in iChat (don't know if it was 48x48 or 64x64) including transparency and you will see transparency but others won't. Although there is one exception where it is possible to show other people the image you have including transparency and that is to use Linux with I believe GAIM, I know it is very strange why only this AIM client can do that.
