I recently bought this to put the hard drive from an exploded external drive in.

So far, all is well in 10.2.8.

I want to install 10.3.1, but dare not on account of the stories of 10.3 destroying people's information.

It is recommended, by Apple themselves, to upgrade the firmware to the latest version, 1.04 I think.

Where can I find this firmware? I have looked very hard, but can find nothing. Does anyone know?

From the image, that looks like the same enclosure as the one I've bought recently from FireWireDirect.com. It's the 3.5" Slimline Ultra III FireWire enclosure which you can see on this page. If so... damn! I've just paid too much for mine and if a firmware upgrade is required (which, if it is only FW 400 and not FW 800, it won't be), FWDirect.com should have the necessary downloads.

FWIW, I've had it a few weeks now, and I have had zero problems with mine and Panther (10.3 or 10.3.1). It has a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB drive installed.

Btw, I actually use it as the boot drive for my system, so Panther is installed on the actual drive in the enclosure.
