I've got a G4, a PowerBook, and a not-so-often used iBook. I had a Wallstreet PowerBook, but I've since used it's parts for other things. Today I went to play a protected AAC song on my new PowerBook, and iTunes tells me I have 3 machines registered already. How can I unregister a machine if it no longer exists? Will it just timeout after a period?

You have to fill out a form on the support site for iTMS and they'll manually deauthorize all the machines for your safety. I had to that once as well since I forgot to deauthorize a machine that I sold.

I had to fill out the form as well. It turns out that even if the machine does still exist, if it's been formatted and reinstalled, iTunes won't unauthorize it. Luckily, it took less than a day for them to reset the authorizations for my account, and now I'm in business. I made sure my new powerbook was the first one authorized.

Thank you for contacting iTunes Music Store Customer Service.

We have manually deauthorized your registered systems from the Music Store. You can now reauthorize the computers that you intend to use. To protect our customers' privacy this is not a service that is generally performed. However, given the nature of your situation we have made an exception. If you're selling a computer or plan to no longer use it, make sure you've deauthorized it before you no longer have access to it.
iTMS customer service rocks! That response was within 2 hours. Speedy :-P
