When I got panther I turned on FileVault and used it because I thought it was cool. Then about 1 week later FileVault lost all my settings, I did not lose any files but my all my dock settings and background everything. At the time I just had a PowerMac G4(Sawtooth) upgraded to a 1.3Ghz G4.

I was mad but, I just turned off FileVault and contiuned on. Since then apple released the 10.3.1 update. I did not try it again.
Well here comes the question, I now just recived my 12in 1Ghz Powerbook and I am insterested in FileVault again because this is mobile and I want to protect my files. Did the 10.3.1 update fix the FileVault problem?

I have read about other people having problems but not after 10.3.1. Any buddy using it?

People are still having problems with it. I would wait until 10.3.2 (at least).

bovie, if you have files you want to protect, you can create encrypted disc images, which is essentially what FileVault does. It's not as convenient, but by doing it yourself, you have more control and it doesn't mess with your system.

Just go to Disk Utility, create a disc image of any size (you have to have the space available on your drive, of course), turn on encryption, and it will prompt you to create a password. It will then create a new volume. Double-click on it, enter your password, and it mounts on your desktop like a disc. You can move stuff in and out of it like any other volume. When you unmount it, it encrypts everything until you open it again.

Just keep the password out of your keychain and you've got a pretty secure vault.

I'm waiting on 10.3.2 myself. Panther is just a buggier than normal release.

Anyone know if PGP Disk offers any features over the above? It seems that PGP offers more secure encryption, but I wonder if it's worth it for someone who doesn't really need anything more secure than the AES-128 encryption Disk Utility offers.

Comments?

I've been using FV since 10.3; granted the first version was buggy, 10.3.1 works great for me. Haven't had any problems here.

FV 10.3.1 has managed to delete Mail.app prefs here while "reclaiming disk space", so this problem may not be fixed just yet.

Using DYI encrypted disk images works very well... unless you happen to use Macromedia Studio MX 2004 and want to have its "sites preferences" (where the ftp access data including passwords for all your websites are saved) on the encryped volume as well. Neither Finder Alias nor Unix Link of the actual file or of any enclosing folder are recognized by the MM apps. How they managed this I still don't know.

I believe that most of the problems were relaed to "reclaim disk space". I do allow FV to reclaim disk space everytime I shut down, and so far have not suffered the ill effects others have. I guess I've just been lucky.

Any positive/negative experiences with FileVault since 10.3.2? I am willing to use it but am a little afraid - any thoughts? Might we see more improvements in 10.3.3 onward?

Please share.

Same here: no problems at all since 10.3.2, despite frequent reclaiming of disk space. ::touches wood::
